Timber tie walls are structures designed to hold back soil and prevent erosion on slopes or uneven terrain. They provide erosion control and prevent soil erosion on steep slopes. They create flat areas for landscaping or construction called terracing. Timber tie retaining walls also enhance the visual aspect of outdoor spaces creating an aesthetic appeal.

Timber tie walls can be an effective and attractive solution for managing soil erosion and creating usable land on sloped areas. Proper planning and maintenance are key to their durability and effectiveness in which we ensure through replacing them with modular block retaining walls. However, modular block retaining walls are not always the best fit. From scratch, timber tie walls can be a great cost effective option.

Pre-Replacement

Before replacing timber tie walls, damage must be evaluated meaning inspecting the existing wall for signs of rot, insect damage, or structural failure. It must be decide if the entire wall needs replacing or if only sections can be salvaged. The walls design and plan must be laid out considering factors, such as, height, width, and drainage needs. Vegetation and debris will be removed before the project is carried out. These processes will be carried out during excavation. The area will be dug out behind the existing wall, ensuring a stable foundation for the new wall. Local regulations will be assessed by our company and met. If not already present, consider adding a drainage systems as in gravel backfill or weep holes to prevent water buildup.

Replacement

When replacing a timber tie retaining wall, you must have the best fit materials for the job. Selecting durable, pressure-treated wood or naturally rot-resistant species are highly important ensuring that the wall will last. It is optional, but it is preferred that you opt to use corrosion resistant screws or bolts. The first layer is set to start. The first layer of timbers are leveled and secured in place with stakes or anchors. Additional layers are stacked, adding layers ensures each layer is level and securely anchored. As they are built, they are backfilled with gravel or soil behind the wall to provide support.

Timber can be used in various designs, including straight, curved, or terraced walls, to suit your landscape. It is suitable for retaining soil, creating planters, or simply adding decorative borders. Gardeners love it!
